The Dawn of Artificial General Intelligence?

Professor Chris Bishop will speak on 'The Dawn of Artificial General Intelligence?'

This Erasmus Seminar will take place on Wednesday 1 November 2023 at 18.00 in the Bradfield Room, Darwin College.

Abstract: Earlier this year, ChatGPT reached 100M users just 9 weeks after its release, making it the fastest-growing consumer technology in history. It has also fuelled intense interest in the field of artificial intelligence and has raised awareness of the rapid progress in machine learning over the last few years. This talk will introduce fields of generative AI and machine learning for a broad audience and will offer some thoughts on the potential impact of this technology over the coming years.

Bio: Chris Bishop is a Technical Fellow and Corporate Vice President at Microsoft where he leads the global Microsoft Research AI for Science team. After a PhD in theoretical quantum physics, he spent 8 years working on the physics of nuclear fusion before moving into the field of machine learning 35 years ago. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and a Fellow of Darwin College.
